University of Athens

Dept. of Informatics and Telecommunications

The Department of Informatics and Telecommunications was founded in 1989 and belongs to the School of Science of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. It consists of three sections, namely Theoretical Computer Science, Information Systems and Communications & Signal Processing. Since the department's foundation, courses were accurately oriented towards the convergence of Information & Communications Technologies.

Pervasive Computing Research Group

The pervasive computing research group (p-comp) is an education and research unit of the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications and has an active contribution in national and European research programs. Its research areas include: middleware technologies and information management in wireless sensor networks, middleware technologies for context-aware and location-based services, management and processing of context information, ontologies and semantic web technologies for knowledge bases and intelligent services, networked multimedia applications etc.

Role in POLYSEMA project:

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens will contribute in requirements analysis and overall system design of the POLYSEMA platform, and the coordination of the design and implementation of system components, especially regarding the knowledge management part of the system. Research activity will emphasize on knowledge management technologies and its application on multimedia content and existing network infrastructure. Finally, the University of Athens will be responsible for the smooth integration of the developed sub-systems into a complete "smart" residential gateway prototype.
